Although the horrors I witnessed have robbed me of quiet sleep forever, I have gained valuable knowledge about the Halls in return. Whenever you slay one of their Lords, bring me the Torment Shard they leave behind. The power they hold can be permanently bestowed upon you.

Synopsis[]
- Over a century prior to the game's events, the Scriptor used to belong to a monastic order.
- At some point, in his insanity, the abbot of the monastery began to organize expeditions to the Halls.
- He is initially frozen in ice in the Frozen Depths, due to a failed expedition.
- He is rescued by the player, who thaws him from the block of ice.
- He takes up residence in the Camp.
Dialogue[]
- ... use... fire...
- Thank you, traveler. I must have been trapped in that eternal cold for... decades, maybe. I promise, I will make your efforts worthwhile. But this is not the time to discuss reimbursement. Meet me at the surface. Good luck!
- Good to see you again, and... thank you. I'm brother Marcus. The abbot of my monastery had an unhealthy obsession for the Lords that rule the Halls below our feet. So much so, that he dedicated a large part of our scriptorium to researching them. When the manic ramblings of survivors ceased to satiate his curiosity, he started organizing expeditions to the Halls himself. The rest is history.
- Although the horrors I witnessed have robbed me of quiet sleep forever, I have gained valuable knowledge about the Halls in return. Whenever you slay one of their Lords, bring me the Torment Shard they leave behind. The power they hold can be permanently bestowed upon you.
- About Wellkeeper: I know many stories about men relentlessly chasing riches, as if their path to wealth was a divine prophecy. Not a single one of those stories ends well. I fear for his soul. But I fear for the well-being of those around him even more.
- About Cupbearer: Although he looks foreign to me, the angst in his eyes feels all too familiar; it reminds me of my fallen brethren. The sights we had to endure have branded both our souls. It helps... not being the only one bearing this mark. His presence is comforting to me.
- About Scriptor: My brotherhood used to tend to the largest and most comprehensive library of illuminated manuscripts in these lands. But... it is a very different world now. All my brothers are lost. I'm afraid we failed in our mission.
Compendium[]
The Compendium is a service offered by the Scriptor, which contains 2 tabs, each with its own function:

- Heroes: Allows Hero Stats to be upgraded with Torment Shards.
- These are additive with other multiplier buffs.
- Torment Shards can be quickly assigned by selecting and holding down on the stat.

Trivia[]
- The Compendium has an unlabelled third tab. It is unknown whether this will provide another function in the future.
- The Scriptor's dialogue regarding the Wellkeeper is a subtle hint toward the latter's fate.
- The Scriptor's monastic order is likely a reference to the Benedictines, which maintained sacred texts in Medieval times and is widely recognized as one of the earliest Christian monastic orders.
- Although the Wellkeeper refers to the Scriptor as a friar, friars do not typically reside in monasteries. It is more likely that the Scriptor was a monk.
- This is further supported by the fact that as a merchant, the Wellkeeper would have almost exclusively come across friars instead of monks in his dealings, and would likely also not have known the distinction between the two.
